A New Upper Bound on 2D Online Bin Packing

چکیده
Abstract The 2D Online Bin Packing is a fundamental problem in Computer Science and the determination of its asymptotic competitive ratio has attracted great research attention. In a long series of papers, the lower bound of this ratio has been improved from 1.808, 1.856 to 1.907 and its upper bound reduced from 3.25, 3.0625, 2.8596, 2.7834 to 2.66013. In this paper, we rewrite the upper bound record to 2.5545. Our idea for the improvement is as follows. In SODA 2002 [24], Seiden and van Stee proposed an elegant algorithm called H ⊗B, comprised of the Harmonic algorithm H and the Improved Harmonic algorithm B, for the two-dimensional online bin packing problem and proved that the algorithm has an asymptotic competitive ratio of at most 2.66013. Since the best known online algorithm for one-dimensional bin packing is the Super Harmonic algorithm [25], a natural question to ask is: could a better upper bound be achieved by using the Super Harmonic algorithm instead of the Improved Harmonic algorithm? However, as mentioned in [24], the previous analysis framework does not work. In this paper, we give a positive answer for the above question. A new upper bound of 2.5545 is obtained for 2-dimensional online bin packing. The main idea is to develop new weighting functions for the Super Harmonic algorithm and propose new techniques to bound the total weight in a rectangular bin.

Extending Two-Dimensional Bin Packing Problem: Consideration of Priority for Items
In this paper a two-dimensional non-oriented guillotine bin packing problem is studied when items have different priorities. Our objective is to maximize the total profit which is total revenues minus costs of used bins and wasted area. A genetic algorithm is developed to solve this problem where a new coding scheme is introduced. To evaluate the performance of the proposed GA, first an upper b...
متن کاملImproved Online Hypercube Packing
In this paper, we study online multidimensional bin packing problem when all items are hypercubes. Based on the techniques in one dimensional bin packing algorithm Super Harmonic by Seiden, we give a framework for online hypercube packing problem and obtain new upper bounds of asymptotic competitive ratios. For square packing, we get an upper bound of 2.1439, which is better than 2.24437. For c...
متن کاملOn online bin packing with LIB constraints
In many applications of packing, the location of small items below large items, inside the packed boxes, is forbidden. We consider a variant of the classic online one dimensional bin packing, in which items allocated to each bin are packed there in the order of arrival, satisfying the condition above. This variant is called online bin packing problem with LIB (Larger Item in the Bottom) constra...
متن کاملStrip Packing vs. Bin Packing
In this paper we establish a general algorithmic framework between bin packing and strip packing, with which we achieve the same asymptotic bounds by applying bin packing algorithms to strip packing. More precisely we obtain the following results: (1) Any offline bin packing algorithm can be applied to strip packing maintaining the same asymptotic worst-case ratio. Thus using FFD (MFFD) as a su...
متن کاملLower Bounds for Online Bin Stretching with Several Bins
Online Bin Stretching is a semi-online variant of Bin Packing with a set number of m bins, where all bins can be overpacked to capacity S ≥ 1, which is to be minimized. There is also a guarantee that an offline algorithm can pack the input to m bins of unit size. We focus on the problem of Online Bin Stretching for small m, namely 3 ≤ m ≤ 5. Recent progress on this problem has led into a lower ...
